Snacking
Snacking has been a real bad problem for people not just in the U.S. but everywhere! Those 'mini meals' in fast food joints, or the 'little' bowl of cereal you had after lunch. Notice how I use the ' sign alot. It's because alot of people's judgment has changed. What once was a whole meal has now turned into a big snack. I consider a bagel with cream cheese my breakfast, but some of my friends eat one as their snack. A snack is supposed to be maximum 300 calories. But most people, encouraged by bad judgment of size or names like mini meals, eat such big snacks that they would count as meals. By size and calorie. But still remember, a snack is critical to everyone's diet. So, I hope this post gets you thinking about what you eat for snack. :)

Hi! How do you like my new blog design? I have always admired that background picture and decided to put it on my blog. I guess I just like the 'vibe' of it. I also like the new text colors. Any comments? :)

Northwest Harvest
Hi! Sorry I have only been posting weekly...I will try to get more active with my posting in January. Anyways, tomorrow my class is going on a field trip to Northwest Harvest, a food bank! There, we are going to pack food or do other things that will benefit those in need. I am really thankful for my teacher for making this field trip...since it's not made my the district; and she also has to get all of the parent drivers(who I also thank) to drive all of the students in my class, including me, to Northwest Harvest. I hope there is good weather, and I am really looking forward to it...I am also looking forward to something else...which is my birthday! It's on Friday, and I am really excited because that's the day my school(and many others) get out for Christmas break! So I'm also really pumped up about that too. This week is a pretty eventful week for me! :)

Christmas is Coming!
Hi! I realized I haven't posted in a week! Sorry about that...I have been so busy with my family getting Christmas decorations up. I am so happy that Christmas is coming! Are you? Since last year my family was traveling during Christmas, we couldn't get any Christmas decorations up :(. But this year, we definitely can, and we already have our Christmas tree up! Even though the lights outside the house aren't up yet, they will be by Saturday. The decorations are so pretty in the houses around us with all of the different colored lights and other things(there are so many other 'things' I can't really think of another name for them)! But even though Christmas is more of a giving holiday, most families also have a large feast with it. So remember to not make too many sugar cookies and not drink too much(or better, not any) soda! And if you do, you'll feel good about it the next day.:)

Soda...why it's bad
As you know..the food that causes obesity is junk food, food that carries lots of fat and sugar and just isn't good for you. And one of the foods that can make you obese is soda! Soda carries so much sugar and once you drink it, you just can't stop drinking it until you can or bottle is all out! And, I had also heard on the radio that soda is a special kind of drink...it can somehow surpass your immune system and that means even if you drink a lot of it, you still won't be full. So...even if you have a big party, do what my family does and just get yummy juice instead! :)
P.S. : I just wanted to say that Priya is having a giveaway on her for a $65 gift card to use at CSN stores! For more info, click on this link. Thanks!
P.P.S. : I also hope you like the new layout...I tried to make it sort of a mellow Christmas theme.

Fast food on CBS Evening News
I had just seen an interesting story on the CBS Evening news about how fast food is attracting so much more kids, and not fighting obesity...here is a link. Hope you like the story...:D

Hello again/elections
I am so sorry I haven't been posting in such a long while! I have so much work and life is just too busy for me. But now I will try to post more regularly. :D
I am not sure what about obesity I should talk so I'd rather talk about another topic that has interested me. That topic is elections. Even though they are over now, I still have been thinking about them. The republicans have surprisingly fought back against the democrats. At least they didn't get senate majority( I'm a democrat, but if you're not think of that the other way around). But I am so happy now that all those television adds are done!!! They were really getting on my nerves. My teacher also told me that one day she had gotten about 30 political fliers in her mailbox.
Sorry that elections isn't the topic you would expect from my blog, but I just wanted to say a little bit about it. Again, sorry about not posting in a while.

Where obesity is popular
I was looking up which state in the USA was the most obese state. It is Mississippi, in which 33.8% of adults are obese. The thinnest state was Colorado, where 19.1% of adults are obese. In Washington, 26.3% of adults are obese, which is in the middle. It is pretty shocking how many adults are obese. I hope we can get the percentage down really low, especially in Mississippi. And imagine how many kids are overweight too. And if kids parents have bad eating habits, their kids will probably pick them up from them. Do you think it is really shocking how high obesity percentages are so high? And when you think that they might go down, you realize that when some people cure obesity, other people are getting obese. We really need to change our habits if we want to become healthier. (As in we, I mean the state, not certain people).
11 days later...
I guess everyone is busy because nobody is commenting...oh well, I guess I will keep posting anyway.

Hobbie post!
As I promised Gloson, every once in a while I will post about one of my hobbies. Today I will post about swimming. I have a lot hobbies, my schedule is martial arts on Monday and Thursday, swimming on Tuesday, piano on Wednesday, and a program called Kumon which is like tutoring on Friday . Today I have swimming.
I have been swimming ever since I was in kindergarten. Now, in sixth grade, I am in pre-competition level swimming lots and lost of laps(each 25 yards) in a 12-foot pool. My mom said at first I was too afraid to even jump into the water. Now I am diving into it from a diving block. Wow. I can't imagine being so scared of the pool. Usually when I tell people I go swimming, they think it means playing and splashing in shallow water, but it's anything but that. When I get out of the pool, my skin is glazed with water and cold sweat, and I am exhausted. Each class is a long one hour. But swimming makes me refreshed and is actually pretty fun, if you have a good attitude about it. It is a backup plan to get a job or even a scholarship. But if you do anything, you have to put your heart into it, which I am sure I do with swimming.
P.S. Today, October 15 is Adora's birthday! So happy birthday Adora!!!

I just would like to take a moment to thank everybody who is reading my blog. You have really boosted my confidence and made me happy. Whenever you post a comment you really introduce me to a new thing or new way of thought. Or you just reflect on something I asked you in my post. This thank you is mostly aimed to Adora, Priya, Maya, and Gloson. :) Once again...THANK YOU!!!
Back from camp/ fast food
Hello! I am back from camp, which was absolutely awesome! I was a little homesick though, so I am happy to be back home. I appreciate everybody who is reading and commenting on my blog, thank you! I love enjoying wildlife and nature is so beautiful. I was thinking of making some poems about nature, since I like writing and poems (especially reading them). Any ideas?
I was thinking about what causes obesity and I first though of one thing...fast food. Fast food is almost everywhere you go and it is so cheap. It also is more convienient than healthy and expensive food.( Convienient meaning easier to get and cheaper). Why can't healthy food be this way? I mean, even though fruit and veggies are more expensive, why can't we change that. Imagine healthy food being part of fast food instead of greasy french fries and burgers. Even though some fast food resturants have salads and apples and things like that, do they advertise them as much? The obvious answer is no. If fast food was healthy or even healthier, it would save alot of people from being obese. What are your thoughts on this?
P.S.: When I googled my name (for fun) I saw that there was another person with my exact same name on Facebook. I am not on Facebook, so it's funny that there is a person with the exact same name as me on it. I think I am too young and I probably won't have enough time to post anything on it. Also, my dad has an account so if I have an urgent I can post it on his account. Just wanted to say that randomly :D.

More Obesity/camp
I found some more facts on obesity, which just talk about what obesity is:
Obesity means accumulation of excess fat on the body. Obesity is considered a chronic (long-term) disease, like high blood pressure or diabetes. It has many serious long-term consequences for your health, and it is the second leading cause of preventable deaths in the United States (tobacco is the first). Obesity is defined as having a body mass index (BMI) of greater than 30. The BMI is a measure of your weight relative to your height.
Starting this Monday, I am going to sixth grade camp! At my school, Meridian Elementary, the camp is called Camp Waskowitz. Kinda weird name, right? I will be packing after I post this. But everyone says it is going to be so much fun. I am really excited!!! I have been waiting for camp since a long time ago. Is there a sixth grade camp for school's where you live?

obesity thoughts
Hello, how is everybody doing? After I posted my last message, Adora sent me a gmail and she added her thoughts about obesity...which I thought were very interesting. Here they are:
Even though obesity is such an obvious problem--we all see evidence of obesity when we walk down the street--it seems as though there hasn't been a very widespread movement to combat it. I know the First Lady made childhood obesity one of her causes, but I'm not sure if it's had much impact yet. What are your ideas for solving this problem? Another (sad) thing is that as countries like China develop more, they face big childhood obesity issues. I wonder if this is something that comes as countries develop and get a surplus of food, or whether it is dependent on culture. In developed countries like France, despite a large culture of high-fat foods like cheese and butter, eating habits help keep obesity rates down. Maybe what we need is not so much to stick with one healthy food, but rather to eat less overall...what do you think?
Back to me: I also think obesity is caused by eating habits, I mean that people always buy junk food because it is so cheap, and then when they start buying it they can't stop. But the problem is that organic foods are so expensive, and most people won't have the energy to plant a garden. And when I tried to plant a garden with my mom, it does not grow.

hello/10 facts about obesity
Here are some facts I found about obesity...they are pretty shocking! It teaches you that if you eat unhealthy foods and don't exercise, it could have bad consequences.
1. Obesity is considered to be the #1 public health problem in the world, though many people still ignore it as a serious health issue.
2. Obesity occurs when energy intake is more than energy expenditure for a long period of time.
3. Obesity is defined as having BMI - a body mass index of 30 or higher in general. According the World Health Organization (WHO) "overweight" as a BMI equal to or more than 25, and "obesity" as a BMI equal to or more than 30.
4. Eating habits of Americans are very different from other nations. They are considered to be mainly carbohydrate eater, which is the number 1 reason for that US is the fattest country in the world.
5. Every year the diet industry (including weight loss programs, diet foods, diet pills, etc.) profits in more than $40 billion and this figure are increasingly growing year by year.
6. Excessive affects blood pressure, and decrease the body’s ability to use insulin effectively.
7. Statistics show that families living in industrialized towns spend more of their money on meals purchased away from home.
8. Commercially prepared food is higher in sugar and fat.
9. Since the 1960s the average daily calorie intake has increased over the world.
10. Today’s nutrition has moved from being low-calorie plant-based to high-calorie and high-fat animal-based diet.
Also, I am participating in this program called reflections, and the theme is: together we can. I have got some ideas about it, but I am not really sure what I am going to do yet. Here is a link to a site if you want to read more about it: http://www.capta.org/sections/programs/reflections.cfm

theme/question
Hi! I think I have got a theme for my blog...education/kid's nutrition. And maybe random stuff in between. For now I want you to think about this: One boy in my class brings ham and cheese lunchables every single day. With a capri sun juice. The lunchable has three sets of ham and cheese with cracker sandwiches that are really small. It also has one crunch bar(crunchy chocolate) that is bite-size. Even though it is very tiny, the crunch bar has 560 calories in it! Even though this may be an obvious question, do you think it is healthy for this person to eat this every day, and why is it or not?

about me
Hi! My name is Apoorva Chowdhary. I am ten years old and I am in the sixth grade. I do lots of extra curriculum activities like swimming, martial arts, piano. and etc.. I also play the viola. I also really love working with little kids I was inspired to write this blog because of the TEDx event held in Redmond. I am not very sure what this blog is going to be about, but probably it's going to be about nutrition. For now that's all I've got to say. Thanks for reading!
